Dozens of employees at ByteDance’s Singapore office, TikTok’s parent company, were hospitalized following a food poisoning incident. Health and food safety officials are investigating the outbreak, which caused gastroenteritis symptoms in 60 staff members on Tuesday, with 57 requiring hospital treatment.
ByteDance has also stated it is investigating the cause, noting that food is provided by third-party caterers. Seventeen ambulances were dispatched to the office in Singapore’s business district to assist the affected employees.
A ByteDance spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to employee health and safety and its work with emergency services and authorities on the matter.
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Ministry of Health released a joint statement urging food operators to adhere to good food safety practices. The SFA warned of enforcement action against any violations.
Founded in 2012 by Chinese entrepreneurs, ByteDance achieved significant success with its apps Douyin and TikTok, which have over a billion active users globally. TikTok is operated from Singapore and Los Angeles but remains under ByteDance ownership.
