Google Refutes Claims of Reducing AI Overviews Amid Revenue Concerns

Date:

AI Overviews

Google has firmly denied allegations regarding the reduction or elimination of AI Overviews from its Search platform. According to the company, these AI-generated summaries are displayed dynamically and are not designed to appear for every query. Therefore, instances where traditional links appear instead of AI Overviews do not indicate a broader reduction in this feature.

As stated by Google spokesperson Peter Schottenfels, searches for specific keywords or those aimed at directly accessing particular websites may not lead to an AI-generated response. Speculation about the change arose when users reported receiving standard search results rather than the typically generated summaries from Gemini, but Google has not announced any intention to discontinue AI Overviews.

This speculation coincided with rising investor concerns regarding Alphabet’s recent financial performance, including disappointing ad revenue and significant investments in AI infrastructure. While these financial issues have raised questions about the viability of AI-powered search, they do not confirm that AI Overviews have been removed.

Furthermore, Google has acknowledged that its AI Mode, which offers a conversational search experience, is currently generating less advertising revenue compared to traditional search methods. Although usage of AI Mode has increased, it has contributed to a slowdown in the growth of Search revenue, despite an overall rise in search volume. This information pertains specifically to AI Mode and does not indicate any alteration in the availability of AI Overviews.

Some rumors suggest that Google might be abandoning the AI Overview model due to its negative impact on ad click rates and substantial computing resource usage. However, Alphabet reported a 12% year-over-year increase in Google Search and other revenues, with an 8% rise in paid clicks across the related properties. These figures are aggregated and do not specifically highlight the influence of AI Overviews on ad clicks.

The implications of this debate extend to publishers who monitor referral traffic from Google. A recent experimental study involving 1,100 participants revealed that concealing AI features in Search led to increased visits to external websites. In scenarios where all searches utilized AI Mode, the click-through rate was 18.8 percentage points lower compared to the standard search experience. It is important to note that these results reflect the study’s test conditions rather than a universal traffic impact applicable to all websites.

Google’s recent product updates indicate a trend towards further integration of AI features rather than a retreat. On October 15, the company announced enhancements including more visible source links and recent-article carousels for both AI Overviews and AI Mode. Additionally, on October 28, it was revealed that advertisements in AI Mode would be rolled out to more markets. The key unresolved question remains how Google will balance this expansion with the lower ad revenue it has reported for conversational search.
