Rwanda has once again set a continental and global milestone by becoming the first country in Africa to implement a nationwide autonomous health drone delivery system, following the signing of a $150 million expansion agreement with Zipline.
The new agreement builds on Rwanda’s groundbreaking decision in 2016 to deploy Zipline’s medical drone services, a move that transformed access to critical healthcare supplies in remote and rural areas. The latest expansion now extends those capabilities into urban environments, marking a new phase in the country’s technology-driven healthcare strategy.
Strengthening Access to Life-Saving Healthcare
Under the expanded partnership, autonomous drones will deliver vaccines, essential medicines, and blood supplies on demand, ensuring faster and more reliable access to healthcare for communities across the country—both urban and rural.
The system will be fully integrated into Rwanda’s public healthcare network, enabling health facilities to receive urgent medical supplies quickly, quietly, and with high precision. This integration strengthens emergency response, reduces delays, and minimizes medical waste.
Global Leadership Through Vision and Execution
Zipline Africa CEO Caitlin Burton praised Rwanda’s leadership, describing the expansion as a global benchmark for how innovation should be deployed in public services.
“In 2016, Rwanda made a decision that changed health access forever. Rwanda did not ask whether it had been done before—it asked whether it could work and whether it could save lives. Today, Rwanda is doing it again. This is a global first not because the technology exists, but because the leadership exists,” Burton said.
Proven Impact Drives National Scale-Up
According to Zipline Rwanda Country Director Pierre Kayitana, years of collaboration have demonstrated strong system reliability, rapid response times, and significant reductions in medical waste—providing a solid foundation for nationwide expansion.
The expansion will be supported by a new Zipline distribution center in Karongi District, expected to serve approximately 2.9 million people and supply over 200 health posts and 60 hospitals nationwide. This adds to existing Zipline hubs in Muhanga and Kayonza.

Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, welcomed the expansion, highlighting its importance in extending the benefits of drone delivery to more communities, including major urban centers.
“Rwanda and Zipline have worked together for years to harness technology for the good of our people. We have seen how drone delivery saves time, money, and lives. This expansion allows us to bring those benefits to even more communities as we build the foundation for Africa’s future in healthcare and innovation,” she said.
