
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming part of everyday life. From chatbots and smartphones to banking, healthcare and agriculture, AI systems can analyse information and produce useful results in seconds.
But how does AI actually work?
1. You ask a question
The process starts when you give an AI system an instruction or question. This is often called a prompt.
For example:
“How can AI help Rwanda’s agriculture?”
The AI receives your question and prepares it for processing.
2. The AI processes your question
AI systems break text into smaller units called tokens. These can be words, parts of words or punctuation.
This helps the AI understand the structure and context of what you are asking.
3. The AI uses what it has learned
Modern AI models are trained using large amounts of data. During training, they learn patterns and relationships between words, concepts and information.
When you ask a question, the model uses these learned patterns to determine what information is most relevant.
It is important to understand that AI does not think exactly like a human. It uses mathematical calculations to predict useful outputs based on patterns it learned during training.
4. The answer is generated
For text-generating AI, the system predicts which words or tokens should come next.
It does this repeatedly and very quickly until it has generated a complete response.
Powerful computer processors, particularly GPUs, allow many of these calculations to happen extremely fast.
5. You receive the answer
The generated information is presented back to you as a response.
The entire process can happen within seconds, even though powerful computing infrastructure may be performing enormous numbers of calculations behind the scenes.
What AI could mean for Rwanda
Artificial intelligence could support Rwanda across several sectors.
Farmers could use AI to identify crop diseases and analyse agricultural data. Healthcare professionals could use AI-powered tools to support medical analysis. Schools could introduce personalised learning tools, while businesses could use AI to automate repetitive tasks and analyse information.
AI can also create opportunities for Rwandan developers, startups and entrepreneurs to build technology designed specifically for local challenges.
However, AI is not always correct. Users should verify important information, particularly when decisions involve health, finance, law or other high-impact areas.
As AI technology continues to develop, understanding how it works will become increasingly important for individuals, businesses and governments.
