The initiative comes after the Indonesian government prohibited online shopping on social media platforms, a measure to safeguard smaller retailers and consumer data privacy.
Indonesia, with a population exceeding 270 million and a high social media engagement rate, was TikTok’s largest online retail market before the enforcement of the ban in October. President Joko Widodo’s remarks in September influenced the decision to implement the ban, emphasizing the importance of regulatory frameworks for e-commerce.
The e-commerce sector in Indonesia has witnessed exponential growth in recent years. The Central Bank of Indonesia forecasts a six-fold increase in e-commerce sales between 2018 and the following year, reaching 689 trillion Indonesian rupiah (approximately $44 billion).
Before introducing new regulations, TikTok Shop had expanded its presence in Indonesia’s online shopping landscape, competing with dominant platforms like Tokopedia, Shopee, and Lazada. These regulatory challenges in Indonesia add to the scrutiny TikTok faces.
