Microsoft, the technology powerhouse, announced a remarkable profit increase for the quarter ending in September, reaching over $36.6 billion (£27.5 billion). This announcement came just days after the company revealed plans to reduce its workforce by more than 25%.
On Monday, Microsoft disclosed that it would offer buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees as part of its strategy to cut costs while significantly investing in artificial intelligence (AI).
Similar to other leading tech companies, Microsoft is channeling substantial funds into the infrastructure necessary for AI development, despite ongoing uncertainties about the return on such investments.
Following this news, Microsoft’s stock experienced a nearly 2.9% increase during after-hours trading in New York on Wednesday. Investors are closely monitoring the financial performances of tech giants, as they assess the sustainability of the substantial financial commitments made towards AI.
Major players in the tech industry, including Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet, are projected to spend over $700 billion this year alone on AI-related chips and infrastructure, such as data centers.
In its quarterly report, Microsoft revealed a revenue growth of 19% year-over-year, totaling $92.3 billion, largely fueled by a significant surge in its cloud computing sector. The Microsoft Cloud services saw a 30% revenue increase, contributing to the overall earnings boost.
However, the company also acknowledged potential risks, including the considerable investments in AI and other uncertainties that could affect its financial stability. Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, noted that advancements in AI have spurred greater adoption of technology, resulting in tangible benefits across various industries.
