The highly anticipated release of the sixth edition of the Grand Theft Auto franchise is set for autumn 2025, according to an announcement from its publisher, Take-Two Interactive. The developer Rockstar Games parent company shared this news during its latest earnings call.
The level of anticipation for GTA 6 is nothing short of staggering. The game’s trailer, which was released by Rockstar in December following an online leak, has already garnered a mind-boggling 190 million views on YouTube. Piers Harding-Rolls, a renowned gaming industry analyst, even Speculated to the BBC that the extended development period could make GTA 6 the most expensive game ever created.
“Rockstar is known for lengthy game development cycles as it strives to perfect its games before they are released, but the wait for GTA 6 has been longer than ever,” Harding-Rolls noted. He added that the ongoing success of GTA 5 has allowed Rockstar to avoid rushing out a less polished successor.
Despite being released over a decade ago, GTA 5 remains a significant revenue generator for Take-Two. During the investor call, the company disclosed that GTA 5 has sold 200 million units worldwide, with a 35% increase in its audience size last year. This achievement remains the second best-selling video game of all time, behind Minecraft.
Harding-Rolls suggested that while Take-Two may feel no pressure to expedite GTA 6, the release timing might disappoint console platform companies and game retailers hoping for an earlier 2025 launch to boost their sales.
In related news, Nintendo announced earlier this month that it plans to reveal a successor to its Switch consoleĀ before March 2025.
