Rwanda’s fashion industry has flourished in recent years, largely thanks to the contributions of talented female entrepreneurs. Despite numerous challenges, these women have shown remarkable resilience, creativity, and business acumen. This article highlights 15 outstanding female entrepreneurs transforming Rwanda’s fashion landscape.

Pioneering Women in Rwandan Fashion

  1. Sonia Mugabo: Founder of her namesake brand, Mugabo’s designs blend Rwandan culture with contemporary style, emphasising sustainability and craftsmanship. Her brand employs local artisans to produce high-quality “Made in Rwanda” clothing, setting a standard for regional and global markets.
  2. Girabawe Gloria: Founder of Flove Rwanda, a social enterprise producing eco-friendly handbags and empowering teenage mothers through sustainable livelihoods. Flove challenges societal norms surrounding adolescent pregnancy by providing young mothers with confidence and financial independence.
  3. Sarah Legrand: CEO of K’tsobe Jewelry, known for elegant pieces crafted from natural and noble materials inspired by nature, Rwandan symbols, and global cultures. Legrand’s jewellery offers a distinctively beautiful aesthetic, combining traditional motifs with modern designs.
  4. Teta Isibo: Founder and creative director of Inzuki Designs, a self-taught designer passionate about youth entrepreneurship, women empowerment, and innovative design. Inzuki Designs is known for its vibrant, bold, contemporary jewellery, accessories, and interior decor.
  5. Joselyne Umutoniwase: Founder of Rwanda Clothing Ltd, offering well-tailored and customised clothing. The company employs numerous women and has gained recognition beyond Rwanda. Rwanda Clothing Ltd has grown from a small workshop to a significant player in the fashion industry, with showrooms in Kigali and international recognition.
  6. Haute Baso: An ethical lifestyle brand focused on premium made-in-Rwanda fashion, food, and arts, empowering women and youth and preserving Rwandan culture. Haute Baso creates thoughtful, simple, and functional designs to impact the community positively.
  7. Karen N Uwera: Founder of Karssh Collections Ltd, merging modernity with Rwandan culture to create bespoke fashion pieces. Karssh Collections aims to uphold the unique beauty of Rwandan culture, climate, and nature through its made-to-order fashion.
  8. Gloria Kamanzi Uwizera: Founder of Glo Creations, specialising in quality handcrafted products that blend efficiency with environmental and social responsibility. Glo Creations has built a strong network in the Rwandan market, delivering unique and sustainable products.
  9. Umutoni Rwema Laurène: Founder of Uzi Collections, a brand offering unique, high-quality “Made in Rwanda” clothing, empowering young female tailors. Uzi Collections has grown into one of Rwanda’s leading fashion brands, known for its distinct and high-quality apparel.
  10. Shema Charlotte: Founder of Touch of Rwanda Fashion Designs, offering a range of clothing and accessories for all ages. The brand is known for its diverse materials and custom-made pieces, catering to men, women, and children.
  11. Antoinette and Ines: Co-founders of Mille Collines, a brand known for unique designs combining African and global influences. Mille Collines started in Kigali and has expanded internationally, celebrating the collaboration between Rwandan artisans and international designers.
  12. Bernadette Umunyana: Founder of Dokmai, promoting Rwandan handcrafted products inspired by the country’s beauty. Dokmai focuses on fair trade and handmade goods, specialising in hand-woven and naturally dyed silk products.
  13. Joy Ndunguste and Janet Nkubana are the founders of Gahaya Links, which empowers women through traditional Rwandan weaving. Gahaya Links was created to provide income generation and economic empowerment for women affected by the 1994 Rwandan Genocide.
  14. Azizi Life: An initiative supporting artisan cooperatives, providing a global market for their work. Azizi Life connects Rwandan artisans with customers worldwide, promoting fair trade and sustainable practices.
  15. Kevine Kagirimpundu and Ysolde Shimwe are the founders of UZURI K & Y, renowned for eco-friendly footwear and a commitment to sustainability through recycling and reusing materials. UZURI K & Y focuses on addressing environmental and unemployment challenges and creating stylish and sustainable footwear.
