Apple is poised to revolutionize its Siri voice assistant and operating systems with the integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a move that could potentially catapult it to the forefront of the competitive AI landscape.
At Monday’s annual developers’ conference, Apple introduced the Siri upgrade and other new features, marking a significant step in its AI journey. This is part of Apple’s new personalized AI system, dubbed “Apple Intelligence,” designed to offer users more straightforward navigation across Apple devices.
New AI Integrations
Thanks to a partnership with OpenAI, updates to iPhone and Mac operating systems will now include access to ChatGPT. This integration will enable text and content generation tools, and a test version will be available this autumn.
Apple CEO Tim Cook highlighted the transformative potential of this move, stating it would take the company’s products “to new heights” during the Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California. However, the announcement saw a fantastic market reaction, with Apple’s share price dropping by 1.91%.
Mixed Reactions
The partnership has yet to be universally welcomed. Tesla and Twitter/X owner Elon Musk criticized Apple on X, citing data security concerns. “Apple has no clue what’s going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI,” Musk said. Apple has yet to respond to these claims.
Rival Samsung also took a jab at Apple’s announcement, posting on X, “Adding ‘Apple’ doesn’t make it new or groundbreaking. Welcome to AI.”
Apple’s primary concern remains whether its new AI tools will help it catch up with competitors who have been quicker to embrace AI. Apple, once the world’s most valuable company, was surpassed by Microsoft in January and chip maker Nvidia in early June.
What is ‘Apple Intelligence’?
Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, noted that while “Apple Intelligence” might reassure investors, integrating ChatGPT could reveal more profound issues. “Apple Intelligence” is not a standalone product but an integral part of every app and device, similar to Microsoft’s AI assistant Copilot, but without additional activation costs.
The Siri voice assistant, acquired by Apple in 2010, has been refreshed with a new interface and a more conversational approach, enhancing user interaction.
Privacy and Security
During the keynote, Apple placed a strong emphasis on the security of Apple Intelligence. With a significant portion of processing performed on the device itself and larger tasks handled in the cloud without data storage, Apple’s commitment to user privacy is unwavering.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, stated, “It draws on your context to give you intelligence that’s most helpful and relevant for you, and it protects your privacy at every step.”
Implications of the Apple-OpenAI Deal
Apple’s decision to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT is a significant development, not only for Apple but also for the broader AI industry. This move, which is a departure from Apple’s traditional product development strategy, signals the company’s recognition of the power of OpenAI’s technology and its willingness to collaborate for mutual benefit.
Apple also announced that its mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, will be available in the UK on July 12, following its February release in the US.
Additional Features Announced
- Sending texts via satellite
- Scheduling messages for later
- Using head gestures to control AirPods Pro
- A dedicated app for passwords accessible across devices
- The ability to hide or lock apps behind Face ID or passcodes
These announcements reflect Apple’s ongoing efforts to innovate and stay competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
