AliExpress enters Africa

AliExpress, the global online retail powerhouse and subsidiary of China’s Alibaba Group, is set to make a groundbreaking entry into the Ethiopian market! According to Dr. Abiyot Bayu, Senior Advisor to Ethiopia’s Minister of Innovation and Technology, the agreement has been finalized, and an official announcement is just around the corner.

This move opens up a world of possibilities for Ethiopia’s digital economy! It builds on a partnership established five years ago between the Ethiopian Ministry of Innovation and Technology and Alibaba Group, aimed at propelling the country’s digital sector into the future. Back then, Alibaba signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ethiopian government to develop an Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP), a visionary initiative proposed by Alibaba founder Jack Ma in 2016. This platform was designed to foster collaboration between private enterprises, international organizations, governments, and social groups, with a special focus on empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and boosting global trade.

Now, with AliExpress on the horizon, the potential for Ethiopia is enormous. This development comes after a virtual meeting on August 7, 2024, between Ethiopian government officials and an Alibaba team led by Chandee Zhuang, Senior Advisor at Alibaba Global Initiatives. The entry of AliExpress into Ethiopia is poised to unlock significant opportunities—creating thousands of jobs, inspiring a wave of startup innovation, and providing a global stage for local products. This could be a transformative boost to Ethiopia’s export potential.

AliExpress’ expansion into Ethiopia also aligns perfectly with the country’s recent reforms aimed at attracting foreign direct investment, paving the way for a stronger digital economy. For entrepreneurs, businesses, and consumers alike, the possibilities are truly endless.

To further encourage foreign investment, the Ethiopian Investment Board (EIB) introduced a new directive on April 18, 2024—Directive No. 1001/2024—which now allows and regulates foreign participation in export, import, wholesale, and retail trade. This was a significant shift, as these areas were previously reserved for domestic investors. Additionally, the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration has launched a new licensing regime for electronic platforms, establishing a dedicated eCommerce license category and streamlining the process for businesses to get started.

The arrival of AliExpress marks a new era for Ethiopia—one filled with opportunities for growth, innovation, and global connections. The future looks bright for Africa.
