Microsoft Ends AI Computing Deal with Oracle Amid Infrastructure Shift

Date:

Microsoft Oracle AI computing deal

Microsoft is concluding its agreement to rent AI computing resources from Oracle, as reported by Bloomberg. The company made the decision not to renew the contract, which involved older Nvidia chip servers that no longer met Microsoft’s evolving requirements.

In recent months, Microsoft has been deactivating the rented capacity, reflecting a broader reassessment of its over $80 billion in contracts with various cloud providers. Concerns about aging hardware have been highlighted, with Gartner indicating that a significant portion of AI infrastructure investments may face substantial write-downs as newer technologies emerge.

Details of the Contract and Future Implications

This deal, initiated in 2023, allowed Microsoft to utilize Oracle’s servers to support its AI-powered Bing search engine. However, the exact scale of the agreement remains unclear. Additionally, negotiations for Microsoft to lease additional capacity from Oracle fell through in June.

While Microsoft has opted not to comment on these developments, Oracle has stated that there is still strong demand for its AI infrastructure, including the older chips. Following this news, Oracle’s stock experienced a decline of approximately 3%.

Microsoft’s strategy includes a commitment of over $80 billion to rent cloud capacity from other providers, such as CoreWeave, Nscale, and Nebius. Frustrations regarding costs and project delays have been reported among Microsoft leaders, leading to a recent decision to decline the opportunity to expand a deal with Nscale in Texas, just weeks after withdrawing from a Nscale site in the UK.

This situation adds to Oracle’s challenges, as heavy investments in AI data centers have resulted in negative free cash flow and a credit rating now only one notch above junk status. Oracle’s shares have seen a significant decrease, dropping more than half since reaching a peak in June.
