Apple’s new foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, has generated significant excitement, with the company’s CEO John Ternus expressing his enthusiasm for the positive response since its launch. However, despite the initial sales success, many customers are reporting issues with cracked screens.
Current Status of iPhone Duo Availability
With a price tag of $1,999 in the UK, the iPhone Duo quickly sold out after its release just over a week ago. Sabhi Kahn, Apple’s new COO, stated that while demand remains high, the company currently cannot predict when more devices will be available. Kahn mentioned during a financial analysts’ call that balancing supply and demand is challenging at this point.
Sales Performance and Challenges
Although the iPhone Duo has faced some early hiccups, including a reported issue that caused a small number of devices to crack, Apple has managed to sell more iPhones globally than ever in the past year. In the quarter leading up to September 26, prior to the iPhone Duo’s release, Apple saw a 17% increase in iPhone sales, reaching $57 billion.
Despite these successes, Apple has been grappling with supply constraints affecting various devices, including iPads and Macs, primarily due to a shortage of advanced microprocessors. Kahn noted that these challenges are expected to persist into the next year, further complicating the situation.
Rising Costs and Market Impact
Apple also faces unprecedented cost increases associated with memory storage, which has been impacted by the rising demand for data centers driven by AI technologies. This situation has forced Apple to raise prices on nearly all its hardware products by approximately 20%.
Sunil Krishnan from Aviva Investors remarked that, despite some concerns regarding profit margins and memory chip costs, Apple’s performance remains impressive, with margins still above 45% for a well-established company.
