For many young Rwandans, technology is no longer simply something they use. It is increasingly becoming a place to build a career, start a business and compete for opportunities that extend far beyond Rwanda.
The timing could hardly be more important.
Artificial intelligence is changing how companies operate, software is becoming central to almost every industry, and businesses across Africa are looking for people who understand data, cybersecurity, cloud computing and digital products.
For Rwanda, which has spent years investing in its digital economy, the next challenge is making sure young people have the skills to participate in that future.
And that means going beyond basic computer literacy.
A young person entering the technology industry today needs to understand that learning how to use Microsoft Office or navigate the internet is no longer enough. Those are useful skills, but the opportunities ahead will increasingly belong to people who can build, analyse, automate and solve problems with technology.
Coding remains one of the strongest places to start.
Languages such as Python and JavaScript can open the door to software development, web applications, automation, data analysis and artificial intelligence. But young people should avoid thinking that becoming a programmer simply means memorising hundreds of lines of code.
AI is already changing that.
Modern developers increasingly use AI assistants to help write, test and understand software. That means problem-solving, understanding how systems work and knowing what to build may become even more valuable than simply being able to type code quickly.
This creates an interesting opportunity for Rwanda.
A talented young developer in Kigali can now access many of the same programming languages, open-source technologies, AI tools and online learning resources as a developer working in London, Nairobi or San Francisco.
Geography still matters, but considerably less than it once did.
Someone with a laptop, internet connection and the right skills can build software for businesses anywhere in the world.
AI skills will become increasingly important
Young Rwandans should also become comfortable working with artificial intelligence.
That does not mean everyone needs to become an AI researcher.
For most people, understanding how to use AI effectively within their profession will be more important.
A journalist could use AI for research and analysing documents. An accountant could automate repetitive financial work. A designer could accelerate parts of the creative process. A programmer could build applications much faster.
The advantage will increasingly belong to people who understand both their profession and how AI can improve it.
For those who want to specialise further, areas such as machine learning, data science and AI engineering could provide valuable career opportunities.
Data skills will be particularly important because artificial intelligence depends heavily on information.
Companies need people who can collect, clean, analyse and understand data. Learning tools such as SQL, Python and data visualisation platforms can therefore provide a strong foundation for careers across banking, telecommunications, healthcare, government and technology.
Cybersecurity deserves similar attention.
As Rwanda puts more services, payments and information online, protecting those systems becomes increasingly important.
Banks need cybersecurity professionals. Government institutions need them. Telecom companies need them. Startups need them.
The more digital Rwanda becomes, the more valuable people who understand digital security are likely to become.
Cloud computing is another area young people should consider.
Much of today’s internet runs through cloud infrastructure. Understanding platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud can provide skills that are useful well beyond Rwanda.
But technical knowledge alone will not guarantee success.
One of the most underrated technology skills is communication.
Companies need people who can understand a problem, explain it clearly and work with others to solve it. A brilliant programmer who cannot communicate with customers or colleagues can still struggle professionally.
Young people interested in technology should therefore develop their writing, presentation and business skills alongside their technical abilities.
English can also be an important advantage because much of the world’s technical documentation and international technology business is conducted in English. At the same time, Rwanda’s multilingual population creates opportunities to develop technology that works in Kinyarwanda and other African languages.
There is another skill that deserves much more attention: entrepreneurship.
Not every talented young Rwandan should aspire only to work for an established technology company.
Some should build the next ones.
Rwanda has problems that technology can help solve. Agriculture, healthcare, transportation, education, financial services and tourism all contain opportunities for entrepreneurs willing to understand those problems deeply.
The objective should not simply be to create another app.
It should be to solve something useful.
A young entrepreneur who develops technology helping Rwandan farmers improve productivity, for example, may eventually discover that farmers in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya or other African countries face similar challenges.
That is how a local solution can become a regional company.
Young Rwandans should also recognise that they do not necessarily need to wait for somebody to employ them before gaining experience.
Build something.
Create a website for a local business. Analyse a public dataset. Develop a simple mobile application. Automate a repetitive task. Contribute to an open-source project. Build an AI tool addressing a problem you understand.
A portfolio of real projects can sometimes demonstrate ability more effectively than another certificate.
Certificates still have value, particularly in specialised areas such as cloud computing and cybersecurity. University education remains important too.
But technology rewards people who can demonstrate what they know.
The young developer who has built five useful projects has something tangible to show an employer or customer.
Perhaps the most important skill of all, however, will be the ability to keep learning.
The technology young Rwandans learn today will change.
Programming tools will change. AI models will improve. New cybersecurity threats will appear. Some jobs will disappear and entirely new professions will emerge.
Nobody can learn one technology at 20 years old and expect that knowledge to remain sufficient for the next 40 years.
The people who succeed will be those who become comfortable learning continuously.
Rwanda has made clear that technology will play an important role in its economic future. But strategies, innovation centres and infrastructure alone cannot create a digital economy.
People do.
The next generation of Rwandan engineers, founders, designers, researchers and technology professionals is already growing up.
The opportunity in front of them is larger than finding a technology job in Kigali.
With the right skills, a young person in Rwanda can build for Africa and work for the world.
