Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s Pay Surges Amid Cybersecurity Challenges and Job Cuts

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella pay 2024

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s earnings reached $79.1 million last year, a 63% increase from the previous year, despite his request to reduce a portion of his pay package due to cybersecurity issues impacting the company. Nadella voluntarily opted for a $5 million reduction in his cash incentive as a gesture of accountability for cyber attacks that affected Microsoft’s security, including a breach in 2023 where hackers accessed the email accounts of about 25 organizations, including government agencies.

In the past fiscal year, ending June 30, 2024, Microsoft reported a 16% revenue increase. The board acknowledged the strong company performance in a proxy statement filed with the US financial regulator. However, the statement revealed that Nadella urged the compensation committee to adjust his cash incentive, highlighting the importance of responsibility in light of recent cybersecurity incidents.

The bulk of Nadella’s pay—$71.2 million—was from stock options. In comparison, his cash compensation totalled $5.2 million following the cut he requested. Despite the significant earnings, his remuneration is part of a broader debate on executive pay in big tech. Luke Hildyard, director of the High Pay Centre, remarked on the appropriateness of such earnings, suggesting that the additional compensation could have been more evenly shared among Microsoft’s employees and broader stakeholders, contributing to its success.

Like other tech firms, Microsoft has undergone extensive workforce adjustments, including layoffs in divisions such as gaming. In comparison, other tech CEOs also received substantial pay packages, with Apple’s Tim Cook earning $63.2 million and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang at $34.2 million. However, even these earnings fall short of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who could earn up to $56 billion based on performance targets, setting a precedent in the ongoing discussion about tech executive compensation amidst industry challenges.
