Lionsgate AI collaboration

Lionsgate AI collaboration

Lionsgate, the studio behind blockbuster series like The Hunger Games and John Wick, has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI) company Runway. The deal will allow Runway to train a new AI model on Lionsgate’s extensive film and TV archive, potentially reshaping content production.

AI Integration in Film Production

The partnership aims to leverage AI technology for future productions, as Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns explained: “Runway… will help us utilize AI to develop cutting-edge, capital-efficient content creation opportunities.” However, specific details on how this AI model will be used in film production remain sparse.

Mixed Reactions to AI in Hollywood

The announcement comes at a time of heightened tension in Hollywood, where the use of AI in film production was a vital issue during the 2023 actor’s strike. Many in the creative industry have expressed concerns over potential job losses. Writer and producer Helen Delzany warned that AI could lead to “stale film and entertainment” while taking away jobs.

On social media, actor Alexander Chard voiced his worries, stating that AI is turning creatives into mere contributors to machines, eventually rendering them unnecessary. Other online users condemned the partnership, calling it “vile” and “disgusting.”

Support from Industry Leaders

Not everyone in the industry views the collaboration negatively. PJ Acetturo, a producer and CEO of an AI entertainment company, called the partnership “amazing for the industry” and a chance to blend the worlds of AI and traditional film production. He sees it as an opportunity to enhance, rather than replace, human creativity.

Runway’s CEO, Cristóbal Valenzuela, addressed concerns about job losses, reassuring that AI is a tool to assist in creative challenges, not a job replacement. “Artists are always in control of their tools,” Valenzuela said.

Controversies Surrounding Runway

Despite these assurances, Runway has faced controversies. The company is currently involved in a lawsuit for potential copyright infringement, as a group of artists accuse Runway of illegally storing images in its AI generation systems.
