Owned by China’s ByteDance, TikTok plans to channel overĀ $1.5 billionĀ into Indonesia’s prominent e-commerce platform, Tokopedia. This move follows TikTok Shop’s temporary closure in Indonesia last October, adhering to new regulatory requirements in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

With approximately 125 million Indonesian users, TikTok’s strategic move entails acquiring over 75% of Tokopedia. This acquisition will facilitate integrating TikTok Shop’s Indonesian operations into Tokopedia. The collaboration will begin with a pilot phase, conducted under the close observation and guidance of pertinent regulatory bodies, as stated by both companies in a joint statement.

This partnership will boost the promotion of Indonesian products on both platforms, assisting the nation’s small and medium-sized enterprises enhance their production and sales strategies. The initiative comes after the Indonesian government prohibited online shopping on social media platforms, a measure to safeguard smaller retailers and consumer data privacy.

Indonesia, with a population exceeding 270 million and a high social media engagement rate, was TikTok’s largest online retail market before the enforcement of the ban in October. President Joko Widodo’s remarks in September influenced the decision to implement the ban, emphasizing the importance of regulatory frameworks for e-commerce.

The e-commerce sector in Indonesia has witnessed exponential growth in recent years. The Central Bank of Indonesia forecasts a six-fold increase in e-commerce sales between 2018 and the following year, reaching 689 trillion Indonesian rupiah (approximately $44 billion).

Before introducing new regulations, TikTok Shop had expanded its presence in Indonesia’s online shopping landscape, competing with dominant platforms like Tokopedia, Shopee, and Lazada. These regulatory challenges in Indonesia add to the scrutiny TikTok faces.
